This past Friday, your Styledash team hit up the GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion event in Los Angeles, which we’ll be writing about in more detail later. We were introduced to a few relatively new names in fashion, and one of them is Christian Weber, who was most recently at BCBG Max Azria and Rock & Republic before starting his own line in 2006.The gold long sleeve minidress is part of Christian Weber’s Fall 2007 Collection, aptly named “Arms and Armor” for the permanent exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
How perfect is this dress for either a night on the town with the ladies, or dressed up a little more for a swanky Holiday party?
Yes, it is official. This fall season, the jersey minidress has replaced the shirtdress as my functional fashion in my wardrobe. I used to wear shirtdresses all the time to work because they had a professional look with a collar, but still let me feel like a lady because it’s a dress.
Professional-looking though it may be, the shirtdress is uncomfortable with it’s stiff materials and the fear of popping a button in an embarrassing place. I sit in a chair all day. When I’m at work, I grind. I need to be comfortable, and since wearing a tracksuit to work isn’t really an option, I’m sticking with jersey dresses, like the Pleated Jersey Scoopneck Dress by Sweet Pea. Though it’s a minidress, the long sleeves are fit for the season. The pleating and lack of waistline make it an easy wear for sitting at a desk for 12 hours straight. It also comes in black.
Available from Bluefly for $54.
Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s the stress at work. Whatever it is, I am all about dressing comfortably these days. However, dressing comfortably doesn’t mean I want to show up at the office in flip-flops, sweatpants, and a hoodie.Dress Jazz by Fighting Eel is comfort all-around, made from a stretchy, soft jersey fabric. The gentle scoop neckline is neither too low nor too high, and the sheared princess yoke gives the bustline a flattering shape. The most attractive feature (to me) of course, is the on-seam pockets. The hemline is a little high, but that’s nothing a great pair of tights under a kicky pair of knee high boots can’t fix.
The dress is available from Active Endeavors for $145 in both red and black.
Perhaps it’s a little late in the season to be looking at short-sleeved minidresses with fairly high hemlines, but it’s definitely not late at all to shop sales. The black and white striped minidress by Vince was $120, but is now $47.50 at Saks. The rayon and Lycra jersey dress features a modest scoop neck, ruching to add volume to the bustline, and short, fitted sleeves. Hitting at mid-thigh, the dress isn’t all that short, but for fall, it definitely calls out for a pair of black leggings.
Available at Saks Fifith Avenue.
Why bother with a putting on a dress and then covering it up with a coat to keep warm when you could do it all in one shot?
It may not be quite as cozy as multiple layers, but Burberry’s Metallic Shirtdress takes the classic styling of the trench coat and turns it into a stylish dress. Like a trench coat, the deep dark, metallic ruby red dress features a spread collar, double-breasted button front, yoked button-flaps on chest and back, and a belted waist. The A-line skirt has side gathered-flap pockets. The only thing is that the dress has short, cap sleeves, but isn’t that just the perfect way to show off those arms you’ve been working on all month?
The dress is available from Neiman Marcus for $895.
Is that a $3,000 designer gown, or a few trash bags held together by tape and staples? That’s the question Louise Roe, a TV presenter for Vogue, was hoping everyone would be asking at Milan Fashion Week — after she arrived in an outfit created entirely from refuse receptacles.
It was a challenge from her editor, inspired by the recent trend of designers creating absurdly expensive pieces — like $100,00 bags and $80,000 dresses — as they attempt to distance themselves from the cheaply-made, disposable fashion you find at discount retailers like H&M and Target.
And apparently it worked. After stapling herself into the “surprisingly comfortable” BLD (bin liner dress), Roe showed up at the first fashion show of the day, and was immediately pounced on by paparazzi, who all wanted to shoot her new look. When journalists started asking where she’d bought the dress, Roe knew her experiment had been a success.
Think you could pull off wearing a trash bag on your next night out? Scroll to the bottom of this Daily Mail article to find instructions on how you can create your own.
I am more of a solids girl (and if you must know, I pretty much stick to a basic, neutral palette of black, white, ivory, and beige in my wardrobe), but I am beginning to think that stripes might be a good way for me to ease into patterns.
Betsey Johnson’s Sequin Stripe Dress is a standard black and white stripe, and since it’s pretty balls-y to go with a horizontal stripe, you may as well go all out and scream “Look at me!” with some sparkling sequins. Black shoes of any type are the natural choice, but with this much shine on the dress, I’d stay away from patent leather.
Who says you can’t wear white after Labor Day, especially if it’s black and white? Not me. Not Alice and Olivia.
The Colorblocked Mini Shift dress by Alice + Olivia is pure comfort because it’s a sweaterdress . With a high-but-wide neckline accented with a double band of black, three-quarter length sleeves, and a fairly modest hemline (for a minidress, that is), you could wear this to work with a smart pair of flats, then do the quick-change into a pair of black patent platform pumps with a rounded toe and head out for Happy Hour.
Available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $242.
If nothing else, friends, nothing at all, the Lace Crocheted Dress must be had purely for the sheer discount on it from Neiman Marcus. It was $1,095. Yes, that’s one thousand ninety five dollars, but is now on Last Call Clearance over Neiman’s - get ready for this…$306.
Luckily, See by Chloe’s Lace Crocheted Dress is actually gorgeous making that $306 a pretty little steal. , Though it’s sheer and made of crocheted lace, a very spring/summer look, the cream color makes it workable for the transition into fall. Just throw on some super lightweight tights underneath, a pair of gold Mary Janes, and you’re set for the rest of September.
I know that navy blue and white, particularly in a style that looks so much like Sailor Moon, is mostly a Spring look, but I couldn’t help but find the Carly Minidress absolutely adorable for this transition period between Summer and Fall. The Carly dress comes from LA-based designer Myne. The dress is 100% silk and features a wide round neckline with rounded collar, white gathered cuffs on a slightly more than three-quarter length sleeve, and white trim on angled pockets. I love that the dress looks so sweet but is still a little racy with its short hemline.
The Carly dress also comes in gray. Both are available from Revolve Clothing for $264.
