Charlie Brown, fashion icon

Charlie Brown teeBack in February, styles were hitting the runways that looked inspired by (if not totally stolen from) everyone’s favorite depressed cartoon, Charlie Brown. Now it appears we’re done referencing Peanuts characters, and can instead dress exactly them.

Fashionista spotted this iconic Charlie Brown zigzag tee at Fred Flare, apparently intended for the man who doesn’t mind wearing bright yellow all winter long.

Honestly dudes, I’d steer clear of this one. This is one of those t-shirts — much like those adorned with oh-so-clever catch phrases — that seems like it’d be a really good idea. However, when you put it on, you’ll look more like socially maladjusted junior high student than a fashion-forward grown-up.

Simply stylish: the jersey polo

Marc Jabcobs jersey poloIf there’s one thing I’m consistently noticing about menswear for the fall and winter, it’s the simplicity. The bright colors, bold patterns and loud graphics of spring and summer have been replaced by plain, fitted tops in gray, black, brown and a some darker Earth tones. Some of this is typical for cold-weather clothing, but I think, on the whole, we’re moving away from the loud look, and toward something that’s a little more sophisticated — more grown-up, even. Not to say you can’t keep it casual — because what normal person can really be bothered to dress up 7 days a week?

That’s why I’m such a fan of this jersey polo from Marc Jacobs. It’s low-key, and seemingly straightforward, but on closer inspection you’ll notice the little pocket detail, which is a nice touch — not to mention, of course, the perfect fit. It’s a little pricey at almost $90, but with all the layering you’ll be doing, you can get enough use out of this shirt to justify spending a little more than normal.

Must have leggings for Fall ‘07

Guide to LeggingsIf you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That’s my motto when it comes to leggings. Leggings made an uninvited comeback a few years ago. I shuddered at the thought of putting them on my body. The last time I wore leggings with a straight face was in the 3rd grade, and I hadn’t planned on wearing them again. Now that leggings are kind of hard to ignore — I have decided to embrace them.

Leggings are the perfect transition piece to go from summer to fall and will carry your wardrobe throughout the cold winter months. Since they are nice and popular, it’s okay to toss out your $5 leggings from Target to go for something a bit more chic. Expand your leggings wardrobe by going with different colors like navy, cream, plum, and gray. If you are really feeling wild go with a cutesy patterned pair from Primp or take a walk on the wild side with a tiger striped pair from Norma Kamali.

To avoid looking like you just stepped away from a Las Vegas slot machine make sure you wear a tunic or a mini dress with your leggings (no short tops please). Add a jacket and a tall pair of boots with your leggings ensemble to pull it all together.

Fold your shirts quickly and perfectly with cardboard

I’m pretty particular about the way I fold my shirts, and it usually takes me a minute or two to either get it right, or just give up and throw it in the closet. But here in this video you see that with a few scraps of cardboard and a little effort, folding your shirts can be quite simple. Then again, it seems a little over the top to actually construct something like this just to fold shirts. If you do end up actually building a replica of this ingenious cardboard contraption, please let me know (and send pictures of it). And if something like this truly interests you, but you’re not exactly crafty, then check out the $10.99 Perfect Fold Garment Folder over at Amazon.com and save yourself some trouble.

Ugg lust

crochet ugg bootsI have an interesting relationship with Ugg boots. In 2003 when Uggs made their wild comeback, I stood in line and purchased a pair. At the time, I am not even sure I actually liked them, but they were hot and I wanted to make people jealous. I ended up wearing them everyday that winter: with dresses, with pants, out in the snow, inside watching a movie … I wore them 24/7. Once the winter ended so did my Ugg boots, I placed them back in their box and shelved them.Living in LA has stirred the Ugg beast. I wanted to pull them out but I couldn’t — I couldn’t be one of “them” could I? Today I was struck by the beast. I pulled out my dusty Ugg box and place my foot inside the sheepskin boots. Oh Uggs, how I missed you and your comfort.

One problem, they were way too big on me. Which got me to thinking … I need a new pair of Uggs. So as a change of Ugg pace I want to go with the crochet version. They will serve the same purpose as regular pair of Uggs … they won’t necessarily match anything and they will be comfortable.

What do you all think, love them or leave them at the store where they belong?

Comfort Alert: 2B Free

2 b free sweats paris hiltonI am not really into sweats, tracksuits, and the likes but occasionally they are necessary. In my world sweats are only appropriate when it’s raining in Los Angeles (which rarely happens), relaxing at home, and shopping (low-end shopping only). Due to my limited circumstances I don’t own too many pairs of sweats. In fact the last time I purchased sweat pants was back in 2005 when Juicy Couture was really hot.Today it was raining in L.A. so I decided to enjoy the drippy weather by going out on a little shopping trip, nothing fancy - just Loehmann’s. Every time I stop into Loehmann’s for some budget shopping I see tons of sweats by 2B Free. I decided to finally try on a pair and seriously, I have been freed by a pair of sweatpants!

Talk about the most comfortable thing I have put on my body in a long time. I am starting to see why people like to dress in “comfortable” clothing. 2B Free is a Los Angeles based brand who specializes in “rock-n-roll” casual wear that Sarah wrote about back during LA Fashion Week last Spring. 2B Free is a favorite among celebrities like Madonna, Paris Hilton (who walked the runway for the 2BFree show), Nicole Richie, Carmen Electra, and Jessica Simpson.

Prices are kind of steep if you buy at full retail. A pair of sweats on their website is about $150 dollars but if you bargain hunt, like me, you can score a pair for $35. To learn more about 2 B Free click here.

Alice Temperley GO(es) International

The past two Go International for Target lines have been underwhelming at best. There were just too many trendy patterns, theme-y looks and ham-handed references for my taste. (Stop using skulls people!)Thankfully, Alice Temperley’s new fall line redeems my faith in Target’s GO International. Anglophiles will be pleased to see that Temperley has kept the looks true to the fashion sensibilities of her native UK.

The collection is not so much the wild street fashion of House of Holland nor is it the buttoned-up formality of Burberry. Instead, Alice Temperley strikes a perfect chord by blending feminine Victorian influences with a kind of devil-may-care modern street urchin sensibility. I’m especially fond of the way she has chosen to pair navy blue with black — it’s very chic, indeed.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces:

Lace Inset Tank in Navy Voyage ($14.99)
Belted Tunic Sweater in Ebony/ Federal Blue ($29.99)
Moss Stitch Sweater Coat in Brimstone Gray ($44.99)
Crepe Wrap Dress in Navy Voyage/ Ebony ($39.99)

Dust your shoulders off

rachel pally off the shoulder topLabor Day has come and gone, so like it or not summer is (unofficially) over.

If you are dying to show some skin, even as the temperatures begin to drop, the off-the-shoulder, which is making a big comeback, look may be your answer. The shoulder can be a very sexy body part to show off, especially in the Fall when showing off any other part would be obscene.

Rachel Pally has a great long sleeve top that is perfect for showing off your buff shoulders. The top costs $150, is of great quality and can worn for almost any occasion:

Wear this top with a pair of jeans for a simple and sexy look, or pair with a pencil skirt and a jacket for work. Once the clock strikes 5:00, you can toss off the jacket and head out for drinks. For a dinner date just throw on an adorable bubble skirt or wide leg knit pants for a dressier look.

When wearing a solid top add accessories to enhance your look. Whether it be a sassy fedora, over-the-top shoulder grazing earrings, or an obnoxious piece of costume jewelry … feel free to go for it. When you wear solid clothing you are creating the perfect backdrop for your accessories, so go wild and let your personal style shine.

ShopBop and Glamour give back with t-shirts

shopbop and glamour magazine malaria no more tee shirtsDon’t you love it when you can “look good” and “do good” at the same time? It’s not very often that you can find clothing that are both good for charity and aesthetically pleasing. Don’t get me wrong, clothing that help people in need are always a good thing, but sometimes we would rather wear those articles to sleep rather than out in public.

Don’t lie to yourself. You know it’s true.

ShopBop and Glamour Magazine have teamed up to create five limited editions t-shirts that help support the charity Malaria No More. Five hot designers were tasked with designing these “do good” tees: Peter Som, Erin Fetherson, Marchesa, Jovovich-Hawk, and Thakoon.

Each white tee shirt has a unique pen and ink like drawing and will be sold on ShopBop.com for $68. For each Fashion Gives Back tee sold, six bed nets will be donated to women and children in Tanzania through Malaria No More, an organization dedicated to fighting a disease that kills one million children in Africa each year.

Fashion for a good cause is a good thing, so get your shirts while they are still available.
