Can going gray be a beauty do?

Hair color is a $1.4 billion industry here in the United States. Then again, in our youth-driven culture, it isn’t any wonder that women and men are willing to open their wallets wide to keep their hair looking young. But is it really worth it?

Anne Kreamer, a writer living in Brooklyn, set out to find, at least for herself, whether or not coloring her hair was as important as she thought it was. After coloring her hair a dark brown for 20 years, Kreamer decided to give up the bottle and decided to go back to her roots.

In doing so, she explored the two questions that plague every woman who fears the gray hair: Can I be sexually attractive as a gray-haired, middle-aged woman? and Will I be discriminated against in the work world?

The results of Kreamer’s experiment were collected in a book called Going Gray: What I Learned about Beauty, Sex, Work, Motherhood, Authenticity, and Everything Else That Really Matters.

In essence, what Kreamer discovered was that hair color wasn’t as important as she had previously suspected. In fact, gray hair actually worked to her advantage in some interesting ways. For instance, her brunette march.com profile actually received far fewer responses than her gray-haired profile. At least based on the numbers, going gray, it turned out, was good for her game.

So what do you think about going gray? Have you ever considered giving up on the bottle and going au naturale. If you have, did you worry that you will seem less attractive?
