I’m sure even looking half-way decent in the public eye is expensive. Think about everything you’ve ever worn outside your house — that late-night trip to the grocery store, an early-morning jog, or whatever — and then imagine that you’re photographed all the time. How many embarrassing shots of you would be posted all over the Internet?
Looking good is so costly, apparently, that it ate up nearly all of former Latvian president, Vaira Vike-Freiberga’s salary. Like most high-profile politicians, Vike-Freiberga had to look respectable and photo-ready in front of the Queen of England, Emperor of Japan, and other important world figures at moment’s notice — so she bought some nice clothes.
Now that she’s not president anymore, she’s thinking about making that money back by auctioning the clothes off on eBay.
You might think that a former head of state would have a drab wardrobe full of conservative-looking power suits — and I’m sure you’ll find that if you dig through Vike-Freiberga’s closet. But she wasn’t entirely unfashionable, and — on more than one occasion — managed to make some fairly daring fashion choices, all while keeping a sense of presidential authority.
So if you’re a powerful, middle-aged lady with lots of cash, this might just be your auction.
